Whether you're looking for an immediate start to cover seasonal demand or a long-term temp-to-perm position that offers career progression, registering with Recruiting Today gives you access to the best Healthcare Assistant jobs in Edinburgh.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

As a Healthcare Assistant placed through our agency, your role will be vital in supporting clinical teams and ensuring patient comfort and dignity. Your core duties will include:

  • Direct Personal Care: Assisting patients with washing, dressing, toileting, and mobilisation, always promoting independence and respecting individual preferences.
  • Clinical Support: Taking and recording vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration), monitoring fluid intake/output, and reporting any changes in a patient's condition to a registered nurse promptly.
  • Patient Wellbeing & Companionship: Providing emotional support, engaging patients in conversation and activities, and helping to alleviate anxiety or confusion, particularly for those with dementia or long-term conditions.
  • Nutritional Support: Helping patients with meals and drinks, ensuring dietary requirements are met, and accurately completing food and fluid charts.
  • Maintaining a Safe Environment: Adhering to strict infection control protocols, including hand hygiene and use of PPE, and ensuring clinical areas and equipment are clean and well-maintained.
  • Administrative Duties: Contributing to accurate and timely record-keeping in both digital and paper-based patient notes, in line with GDPR and confidentiality policies.

Essential Requirements & Qualifications

To be successful in this Healthcare Assistant role and to ensure the safety and quality of care for our clients, we are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • Proven Experience: At least 6 months of recent, verifiable experience as a Healthcare Assistant, Support Worker, or Care Assistant within the UK. Experience in dementia care, palliative care, or acute hospital settings is highly advantageous.
  • Fundamental Qualifications: A valid Care Certificate or a willingness to complete one. An NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care is a significant plus and may command a higher pay rate.
  • Right to Work & Compliance: Must have the unrestricted right to work in the UK. You will need to undergo a thorough compliance check, including an enhanced DBS certificate (which we can assist you in applying for if needed).
  • Core Skills & Attributes: Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, a resilient and empathetic nature, the ability to work effectively in a team, and a strong understanding of safeguarding vulnerable adults.
  • Practical Requirements: Reliable transport to reach assignments across Edinburgh (some clients may be less accessible by public transport). Flexibility to work a range of shifts, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and night shifts.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

We require a minimum of 6 months of recent, hands-on care experience in a professional setting within the UK. This could be in a care home, hospital, or supported living environment. If you have less experience but possess relevant qualifications (like the Care Certificate) or strong transferable skills from a role like a Teaching Assistant, we encourage you to apply as we may have entry-level support roles available. The key is a demonstrable passion for care and a professional attitude.

For candidates with an up-to-date DBS and all necessary documentation (right to work, references), the process can be incredibly fast – sometimes within 48-72 hours. If you need a new DBS, we can process this for you, which typically takes 5-10 working days. We specialise in on-demand staffing solutions, so our entire system is geared towards speed without compromising on safety or compliance checks.

Absolutely. We believe in investing in our staff. All new starters receive a comprehensive induction. We also offer access to mandatory training (often free or subsidised), including Manual Handling, Basic Life Support/First Aid, Infection Control, and Safeguarding. For those looking to specialise or progress, we can advise on courses for dementia care, catheter care, or working towards an NVQ. Our commitment to development is part of what makes us a leading recruitment service.

We have clients across the entire city and the wider Lothians. We frequently place staff in postcodes like EH3 (central medical districts), EH4 (Western General area), EH10 (Morningside/Bruntsfield), EH16 (Royal Infirmary and surrounding care homes), and EH7 (Leith). We also have roles in surrounding towns such as Musselburgh, Livingston, and Dalkeith. When you register, your consultant will discuss your location preferences and travel capabilities to match you with suitable assignments.
