Job Description: Sexual Health Advisor

Recruiting Today is partnering with leading NHS Trusts and sexual health charities across Southampton to recruit dedicated Sexual Health Advisors. This is a critical frontline role within the SO24 postcode and wider Hampshire region, providing essential support, education, and counselling to service users. Our clients are facing increased demand for sexual health services, creating an urgent need for skilled professionals who can start immediately.

As a specialist healthcare recruitment agency, we understand the sensitive and confidential nature of this work. We connect you with reputable employers who value your expertise, offer comprehensive induction, and provide ongoing clinical supervision. For other specialised support roles, you might also explore our Administrative Support Officer vacancies in Southampton, which often work closely with clinical teams.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Delivering one-to-one and group sexual health education and counselling on topics including contraception, STI prevention, and healthy relationships.
  • Conducing confidential sexual health screenings, taking detailed sexual histories, and providing clear, non-judgmental results and follow-up advice.
  • Supporting clients through the notification process for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), offering partner notification advice and emotional support.
  • Promoting and administering contraceptive services, including providing advice on LARC (Long-Acting Reversible Contraception) and emergency contraception.
  • Accurately maintaining patient records using clinical systems like SystmOne or EMIS, ensuring data protection and confidentiality at all times.
  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including GPs, nurses, outreach workers, and third-sector organisations across Southampton.

Essential Skills & Requirements

  • A recognised qualification in sexual health (e.g., BSWH or equivalent) or substantial proven experience as a Sexual Health Advisor within an NHS or charity setting.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to discuss sensitive issues with people from diverse backgrounds in the SO24 community.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of UK national sexual health guidelines, safeguarding protocols, and data protection (GDPR).
  • A current, clean Enhanced DBS certificate registered on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one immediately through our fast-track process.
  • Flexibility to work across various clinic locations in Southampton, including some evening and weekend sessions as required.

Desirable Experience

Experience in outreach work, working with specific communities (e.g., young people, LGBTQ+ communities), or proficiency in a second language commonly spoken in Southampton is highly advantageous and may command a higher pay rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Assignments are primarily across NHS sexual health clinics and community outreach services within the SO14-SO19 postcode areas, focusing on central Southampton (SO14), Shirley (SO15), and the Royal South Hants Hospital. Some roles may involve outreach work in surrounding Hampshire towns. For those open to relocation, we also manage specialist roles in Winchester.

Yes. We operate a fast-track DBS application service for candidates who are otherwise fully compliant. We can often initiate a new Enhanced DBS with Adult and Child Barred List checks within 24 hours. You can begin some online training while waiting for the certificate, but you cannot start your clinical assignment until the cleared DBS is received.

While many of our clients seek experienced advisors, some clinics have support roles or positions with enhanced supervision suitable for newly qualified professionals. We assess each candidate individually. Gaining experience through a temporary agency role is an excellent way to build your portfolio across different service models in Southampton.

Many of our temporary placements convert to permanent NHS posts for high-performing staff. Additionally, excelling in one assignment opens doors to more senior advisory roles, team leader positions, or specialist pathways (e.g., HIV specialist advisor, young people's sexual health). Our consultants provide career guidance and will notify you of internal permanent vacancies before they are advertised externally.
